What Is Boxing Glove?

Boxing glove is one of a pair of heavily padded leather mittens laced on the palm side of the wrist and hand, worn by boxers in a match or in training for protection. Boxing gloves are worn over hand wraps, which help stabilize the first area against injuries such as the eponymous boxer’s fracture of the fifth metacarpal.

What Are Common Types of Boxing Glove?

01/Competition Gloves

These gloves are used in official boxing matches and tournaments. They are usually made of high-quality leather and have a standard weight and thickness approved by the boxing governing bodies. Competition gloves typically range from 8 ounces to 16 ounces, depending on the boxer’s weight class and the level of competition.

02/Training Gloves

Training Gloves These gloves are lighter and thinner than competition gloves, making them suitable for sparring and training sessions. Training gloves are designed to allow boxers to work on their technique and timing without overstressing their hands or wrists.

03/Sparring Gloves

These gloves are often used when you’re training with a partner, showing respect for their health and well-being is tantamount to showing your respect for the sport, typically to protect your opponent from your mightiest of punches.

04/Bag Gloves

Also known as mitts, bag gloves are heavier and thicker than competition gloves. They are used primarily for hitting heavy bags or other conditioning equipment, such as the double-end bag. Bag gloves provide additional protection and support for the boxer’s hands during intense conditioning sessions.

05/Muay Thai Gloves

These gloves are specifically designed for the sport of Muay Thai, a combat sport that combines boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling. Muay Thai gloves are usually thicker and heavier than standard boxing gloves, with a more padded palm area to protect the boxer’s hands during kicks and elbows.

06/Youth/Beginner Gloves

These gloves are lighter and smaller in size, making them suitable for young boxers or beginners. They provide protection while allowing the boxer to develop their skills and technique without excessive strain on their hands.

What Are Advantages of Boxing Glove?

Protection of the Hands and Wrists

Boxing gloves provide a layer of padding and protection for the boxer’s hands and wrists. Without gloves, punches can easily lead to fractures, sprains, and other serious injuries. The gloves absorb the impact of punches, reducing the risk of these injuries and allowing boxers to train and compete for longer periods.

Reduced Risk of Injury to the Opponent

The padded interior and thicker leather material of boxing gloves also help reduce the severity of impacts on the opponent. This minimizes the chance of cuts, bruises, or other injuries caused by unpadded fists. By reducing the risk of severe injuries, boxing gloves contribute to the overall safety of the sport.

Enhanced Safety for Spectators

The use of boxing gloves adds a level of safety for spectators watching matches. The reduced risk of severe injuries to both boxers means that matches can be more enjoyable and exciting without the fear of serious harm. This allows spectators to fully enjoy the sport without worrying about potential injuries.

Promotion of Fair Competition

Standardized boxing gloves ensure that all boxers have equal equipment, promoting fair competition. This helps create a level playing field where skill and technique are the deciding factors, rather than advantages or disadvantages in equipment. By ensuring everyone has the same protection, boxing gloves contribute to the fairness and competitiveness of the sport.

Protection of the Skin

Boxing gloves also provide protection to the boxer’s skin, preventing abrasions and cuts from punches. This is particularly important during intense training sessions or competitive matches where punches can become more frequent and forceful.

What Are Features of Boxing Gloves?

Grip Bar

A grip bar is a lightweight bar, often made with a dense foam which sits between the fingers and the palm. They are designed to make it feel more natural to make a fist and stop the leather from bunching up uncomfortably in your hand.

Attached Thumb

An attached thumb means the thumb is connected to the fingers with a piece of leather to avoid thumb injuries and accidental eye gouges in boxing. Most gloves now have attached thumbs to keep the thumb in place and prevent these injuries.

Punched Holes

Holes that are often punched directly into the leather on the palm, or the insides of the thumb or fingers. They allow air to flow through to keep your hands cool and help the gloves to dry slightly easier, without losing the natural shape of the leather.

Breathable Mesh

On breathable gloves, parts (or sometimes all) of the palm are replaced with a breathable mesh, which works even better at letting air flow through for maximum comfort.

Elastication

For some special boxing gloves, the separation between the two sides of the palm comes up quite high, so the gloves have an elasticated strip to hold the glove together. It can sometimes provide a tighter fit, as well as making the gloves easier to slide your hand into.

How to Wear Boxing Gloves?

Step 1

Ensure that you have the correct size of boxing gloves for your hand. The gloves should fit snugly but comfortably, with enough room for your hand to move freely. If the gloves are too tight or too loose, they may not protect your hand properly or may slip off during training or competition.

Step 2

Put on the hand wraps. The best way is to hook your thumb, wrist, and hands up to your knuckles while going between your fingers and keeping the wrap slightly tight. They shouldn’t be too tight or they could disrupt the blood flow in your hands.

Step 3

Put your hand into the glove, with the thumb going into the thumb compartment. Make sure that your hand is positioned correctly inside the glove, with the padding evenly distributed around your knuckles and wrist.

Step 4

Secure the glove by tightening the elastic straps or Velcro closures. Start by tightening the straps around the wrist first, then move up to the forearm. Make sure that the glove is secure but not too tight, as this may restrict your movement.

Step 5

Repeat the process for the other glove, ensuring that both gloves are fitted correctly and securely. Finally, check that the gloves are positioned correctly on your hands. They should sit snugly against your wrists and knuckles, providing protection and support.

How to Take Care of Your Boxing Gloves?

Good boxing glove care will ensure that your gloves last for years. Here are some basic tips:

How to Clean Your Boxing Gloves?

Boxing gloves are an essential part of a boxer’s training equipment, but their frequent use, combined with sweat and moisture, can lead to the development of unpleasant odors, making it important to do regular cleaning, which can ensure the durability, hygiene, and performance of the gloves. Here are 4 tips to clean your boxing gloves that requires only soap and water.

Wash in Warm Water

  • No matter the material of your boxing gloves, there’s no need for a fancy anti-bacterial spray or wax to keep them in excellent shape. What’s more, bleaches and harsh soaps can damage their look and feel.
  • Before you suds up, look for a soap formula that is mild and fragrance-free.
  • Put some soap on a rag and dampen it with warm water. Then, wipe both the inside and the outside of the glove, paying special attention to any areas that may have sopped up sweat.
  • Apply different washing approaches according to the material of your gloves:
  1. Non-leather: Polish up the outer boxing glove (thumb included) with a damp washcloth.
  2. Leather: A water-soap mixture should work fine, but you may also use a saddle cleaner if you’d like a more thorough clean. Just remember that leather gloves are designed to develop a patina over time—consider that wear to be your well-deserved battle scar for all those hours you’ve racked up training.

Air-Dry

  • This is the most important step to cleaning your gloves. All types of boxing gloves need to dry completely before you slip them back on again.
  • Attention: There are a few things you want to avoid 3 rookie mistakes:
  1. Exposing them to direct sunlight
  2. Leaving them too close to heat sources (like the radiator)
  3. Putting your gloves directly back in your gym bag after you wash them. This can breed more bacteria, defeating the whole purpose of cleaning.
  • It may be tempting to stick your gloves in the sun or beneath a hair dryer so they dry faster, but too much light or heat can ruin the leather of your gloves. Over time, this can cause them to crack or lose their color.
  • Instead, help your gloves live a long life by letting them dry in a well-ventilated area overnight. Be sure to keep your gloves wide open while drying so that ventilation can access all the nooks and crannies.

Deodorize

  • If the gloves have odors, you can try spraying them with a freshening spray or using a deodorizing powder.
  • For those days when you don’t have the time or energy for a complete post-train cleaning, keeping a glove deodorizer in your gym bag is a good idea.
  • Ideally, you’ll reach for a natural, fragrance-free solution to draw excess moisture out of your gloves and keep harsh chemicals out of the equation.

Try At-Home Remedies For Stubborn Odors

  • If you haven’t made sanitizing gloves routine and don’t think soap and water will cut it anymore, these at-home deodorizers may be worth giving a try:
  1.  Apple cider vinegar: Try mixing a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into your solution of soap and water the next time you set out to wash your gloves. The vinegar may be able to kill lingering bacteria.
  2. Rubbing alcohol: Once a month, you may want to deep-clean with a stronger formula. Mix 1 part isopropyl alcohol (i.e. rubbing alcohol) with 3 parts water in a spray bottle. Squirt the mixture inside your gloves, wipe, and let dry. This is another (slightly stronger) bacteria-busting solution.
  3. Baking soda: This time-tested trick for getting that rank smell out of your fridge could also work on your boxing gloves. Post-workout, try sprinkling some baking soda inside your gloves and leave them to sit for at least an hour, preferably overnight. In the morning, shake out the baking soda and give them a sniff.

How to Choose the Right Pair of Boxing Gloves?

What is your purpose: training on a bag, sparring, or competing?

As mentioned above, there are many different types of boxing gloves – and for good reason. You may choose different types of boxing gloves at different stages of your boxing journey.

How to choose boxing glove weight?

The general rule is to choose a training glove that’s proportionate to your body weight. Smaller weighted boxing gloves are suitable for individuals who are lighter, while heavier boxing gloves work well if you weigh more (but they also create a heavier workout). Also consider your intentions for boxing, as this helps to determine the weight you should be using. For example, 10oz boxing gloves are typically used by professional boxers during competitions, whereas 16oz boxing gloves are common for sparring training.

What material are they made out of?

To protect your hands and support performance, boxing gloves should be compressive, durable and resistant to forceful impacts. You need a quality material like leather for this purpose. Leather is one of the strongest, most comfortable and flexible materials available. It also provides excellent odour and moisture control – which means that leather gloves dry quickly and aren’t likely to stink! Our products may be a good choice for you, with the using of high-quality thickened imitation leather making them flexible and delicate, wear-resistant and dirt-resistant, breathable and comfortable.

How to choose the right boxing glove size?

It’s always best to choose a good quality pair of boxing gloves that fit your hands snugly. This is important for hand protection, because there’s lower risk of injury with less room for your hands to move around. Try on boxing gloves before buying them, to make sure you’re comfortable with the fit. Make sure you leave enough room to wear a hand wrap beneath the boxing gloves.

Do you need to spend a lot of money on boxing gloves?

  • Not necessarily, especially if you’re just starting out. In fact, we would advise against forking out hundreds of dollars on your first pair of boxing gloves. You won’t yet know what type of boxing glove is best for you, and you may not remain committed to the sport – so that’s money down the drain.
  • On the other hand, steer clear from super-cheap boxing gloves, if you can. Vinyl is one material that you may want to avoid for long-term use, as it will wear out quickly, and won’t give you adequate support.
  • Our products are of high quality with affordable price in the meantime, which may be a good choice for you.

A: You want a fit that’s snug but not too tight, large enough to protect your hands but not so clunky it weighs you down.

A: The best boxing gloves for beginners should fit snugly and have enough padding to protect your hands when punching the bag, mitt, or sparring partner. In addition to the weight and size of boxing gloves, you’ll also want to ensure the quality of the ones you choose.
A: You don’t just need one pair of boxing gloves; two to three pairs are needed depending on what training you’re doing and whether you will participate in a real boxing match. For a real boxing match, you’ll want the lightest pair of boxing gloves so your opponent can feel the full force of your punch.
A: To find the right size boxing gloves, you’ll need to measure your hand circumference. Wrap a tape measure around the widest part of your knuckles (excluding the thumb) and record the measurement in inches or centimeters. You can then use a size chart from your preferred boxing glove brand to determine the correct size.

A: If you notice that the leather or material around the knuckle is cracking or showing excessive amount of wear, replace them sooner for safer contact. You should always feel at least 1.5-2” of padding across the knuckle. With additional wear and contact, the foam will break down more quickly and should be replaced.

A: After 4 Continuous Hours. Bacteria and viruses can grow to dangerous levels if allowed. If your gloves haven’t become torn or dirty, the FDA recommends washing hands and putting on new gloves after 4 hours of continuous use.
A: Wrap the measuring tape around your palm, just below the knuckles, not including the thumb. Glove size should be measured in inches. Round up to the nearest half inch. For Proper Cloth gloves, we highly recommend purchasing a half inch larger size (e.g. if your hand measures 8.5″, purchase a glove size 9).
ToggleA: Pour about one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into your hand or onto a clean towel. Rub it inside your gloves thoroughly. Next, allow your boxing gloves to dry overnight in a well-ventilated area. You should notice your gloves no longer stink in the morning, but if you still notice a smell, repeat the process. Content
